Critical Linking: Urban Food Systems and Gardening

I discovered Ron Finley through a Lucky Peach article (RIP, you beautiful food magazine). And it got me wanting to garden. I had dabbled here and there but now I wanted to take it seriously. I spend a lot time thinking about food, reading about food, and talking about food. But not a lot of time actually growing my food.

Ron Finley saw a problem in how people were getting food in South Central Los Angeles. People are hungry, people are getting sick. So he decided to plant gardens in his community. He says, “Gardening is the most therapeutic and defiant act you can do.”

Over the last couple years, I’ve been planting a garden with my Grandma. I listen and watch what she’s doing so I can someday have my own urban garden, even better if its a community garden.

Do you have a garden? Tell me about it!
