A Short Trip to St. Louis

St. Louis wasn’t a planned trip exactly… I went there for a Library conference on communications and marketing. The whole thing was an experience I wasn’t totally expecting.

Illustration of the Gateway Arch behind the Old Courthouse. Did - bought comics at StarClipper, went for a walk in downtown St. Louis, Heard - an announcement for marines on an airplane, a woman crying in the library, saw - a magnificent mac n' cheese, and a movie.
This is an exercise from the great illustrator and writing Lynda Barry – It’s called an X-page where one writes in each section what they did, saw, and heard, in addition to an image from the day.

Either I was in a dark place, or St. Louis was, or we both were. The people I met from St.Louis were all very honest and open-hearted (in good times as well as bad it felt like). And there were times where I wondered if Edmonton was similar to St. Louis and I didn’t want to admit it because of the experience I was having there. It could be that St. Louis is a city best for the people that live there over tourists. Edmonton is that way too.

Also, it wasn’t baseball season.

I wish I had done one of these exercises each day that I was in St. Louis and it might share more of my experience there in a less analytical way. In hindsight, it feels a little less poignant. All in all, I learnt a lot about the Midwest and also myself.

And if you find yourself downtown St. Louis – have lunch at Sugarfire Smokehouse. And buy some cool zines at Starclipper.
