In Alberta, we experience the four seasons in extremes and I feel they are reflected in my everyday life. Especially how I experience music. In the spring and winter, I’m walking to work and have music in my ears for at least an hour everyday. In the summer, I’m listening at home – on the patio or with friends. Music helps me make sense of my feelings without thinking about them too much. My partner taught me that none of us should feel guilt about our emotions. It’s important to be aware of a feeling and then acknowledge it will pass.

Spring 2018 was a time of really living – there were extreme highs and lows. I got married. Family and friends came together and I’ve never felt more supported. Important people in my life are experiencing big life changes. World news leaves our heads spinning. I’m being gentle and not ‘should-ing’ all over myself.

This year, I’ve created playlists for each of the seasons and when I listen back, I’m immediately recall the emotions of that time. Here’s my spring list – I hope you enjoy as much as I have.

Spring Feels (2018)

City Looks Pretty – Courtney Barnett

Ship to Shore – Stars

God’s Plan – Drake

The Constant – The Mighty Mighty Bosstones

T-Shirt – The Beaches

Song for You – Rhye

South London Forever – Florence + the Machine

Heavy Pop – WU LYF

Can’t Hardly Wait – The Replacements

Patricia – Florence + the Machine

It Makes You Forget (Itgehane) – Peggy Gou

This list is public on Google Play.

What type of markers do you use to remember the years or seasons past?

Spring is in the air and changes are afoot. 2015 really feels like a year of big change for many people around me. There is a shift happening. This can bring anxiety over the unknown but I hold on to the idea that change is good and helps us all grow. Hippy dippy? Maybe, but if you don’t like it, the alternative outlook I’m offering is “people are dealing with things.”

The big change for me and Billy in 2015 is that we are moving to Edmonton! Billy has a new job so we found a bitchin’ new city apartment and we’re looking forward to spending the summer there. We’re going to be a neighbourhood where we have friends as neighbours, artisans running around left, right, and centre, and absolutely great restaurants & pubs. I can’t wait to be a local in Old Strathcona again! Leading up to moving, we have a lot of packing to do and this weekend I’m going to attempt my first yard sale. A playlist of edgy music for a hip yard sale? Perhaps. In any case, I’ll be in my backyard drinking coffee, grooving, and hoping someone will buy my stuff.

FYI: Spring + Fever = Spriver (pronounced ‘Spreeever’)

I’ve created playlist for you of my favourite 2014 tunes, a compilation of random post-it notes hastily written in my battered up planner. They collected over a year of being at work, on the road, and at home. The mix is 80 minutes long (just like those old burnt CDs I made in high school). It’s a mish-mash of songs I discovered in 2014, current or old-school, that I couldn’t stop listening to.

Music is an important part of memories I collect over a year. Reflecting on 2014, a challenging year of adult problems, bureaucracy, workplace navigation, and a smattering of trips I’m eager to see what is ahead in 2015. “My ducks are starting to form a row” and I like it. Knock on wood.

Learned and affirmed in 2014:

Trust intuition

Send positive energy into the universe and it will return

Be open but be aware of personal limits

Really listen to what people are and aren’t saying

Get outside of the comfort zone

Freedom is important for a healthy well-being

Be present (but people still want you to answer your mobile phone)

Tomorrow we head to Belgium to celebrate Christmas and ring in the new year, a pretty spectacular start to 2015!
